Terms for Nautical Pet Names L to RLanyard – A rope for tying off.
Larboard – The old name for the left side of the ship. The term these days is port. League – A unit for measuring length. A league equals three miles. List – Describes the hesitation in a roll just before a boat rights itself to roll the other way. Loggerhead – A tool used for driving caulking into seams, made up of an iron ball attached to a long handle. Mainbrace – The brace attached to the mainmast. Mainmast – The tallest mast on the ship. Mainsheet – A sail control line used to adjust the angle of the boom on the mainsail controlling the trim on the mainsail. Marina – A dock for small ships and yachts. Mast – A strong vertical pole on a ship supporting the sails. Masthead – A type of Crow’s Nest part way up a mast. Mess – The dining area on the ship. Mizenmast – The mast next aft (behind) of the mainmast. Nipper – Short rope used to tie up larger cables. Oakum – Old ropes, pulled apart and used for caulking the hulls. Oilskin – Coats or outer wear worn in wet weather. Overbear – Manoeuvring to block the wind from another ship’s sails. Overfall – Describes the situation where the waves are overly steep and breaking heavily in wild conditions and/or shallow water. Ox-Eye – Describes the type of clouds and weather that builds up before a storm.
Parbuckle – A way of tying up an item so it can be safely lifted or hoisted by rope. Parrel – A loose collar on the mast that holds a yard or gaff in place. Pilot – The navigator. Pipe – A whistle used by Boatswains (bosuns) to broadcast information or give commands. Pitch – A vessel's motion, rotating about the beam axis, so the bow pitches up and down. Pitchpole – Describes a boat capsizing end over end (as opposed to rolling sideways). Pontoon – A boat with a flat bottom used as a floating jetty, or a ferry or barge. Poop deck – A high deck at the rear of a ship. Pooped – Describes having a huge wave washing over the boat from the rear. Also means being very tired. Port – The left side of the ship. Porthole – A window in the side of the ship. Usually round. Rigging – Describes the networks of masts, ropes and cables on sailing ships. Rigol – The lip above a porthole. Roll – Describes the way a ship or boat moves from side to side in the water with the motion of the waves
