Provide A Safe But Fun Place To Live

Use our free home safety checklist to prepare your home for kids.

As a parent, home safety is your responsibility. With a little thought and effort you can do a lot to keep your kids safe from accidents.

When you have a toddler home safety becomes very important. Busy little people with busy little hands need constant supervision.

Give yourself peace of mind by knowing that anything dangerous in the house is out of their reach.

Besides the obvious benefit of eliminating danger, it has the added bonus of giving you one less thing to say “No” to. And this really feels good on days when all you seem to do is argue!

Improving home safety isn’t just a matter of locking up cleaning products and household or garage chemicals. You need to have a good look at your house room by room.

It seems to be one of those laws of nature that if there is one thing in a room that you really don’t want a child to touch it is the first thing they will be drawn to.

General Home Safety Checklist

  • Always keep medicine in the safety bottle it came in and store away from food in a high cupboard. Even better if it locks.
  • Always leave chemicals in the clearly marked containers they came in and store in a high place. Again, better if they can be locked up. Never store chemicals in drink or food containers – remember, children may not be able to read but they know the shape a soft drink bottle instantly.
  • Make sure electrical cords are kept in good condition – not frayed or damaged – and kept out of reach of children.
  • Unused power points should be fitted with socket protectors.
  • Screen or bar all upper storey windows. Remember, children are inventive and can drag chairs over to have a better look so never leave anything handy that could be climbed on.
  • Fit stair cases with gates top and bottom.
  • Furniture should be solid with no sharp edges and too heavy for your child to pull over.
  • Always keep a fireguard in front of a fire or heater. Cover or block access to radiators and hot pipes. Teach you child from a young age that they are hot and not to touch.
  • Buy flame-resistant clothing for your children.
  • Fit security door and drawer latches throughout your kitchen.
  • Knives, scissors, matches, lighters, pins and needles should be kept out of reach or in a childproof or locked drawer.
  • If you own a gun, keep it securely locked in a cupboard with its ammunition.

father and daughter, time with your child, quality time
