Use the Home Safety Checklists for Your Hallways and Foyers

There's no need to feel overwhelmed by the potential dangers in your home for children. Just by raising your home safety awareness you will be able to head off potential dangers before they become a problem.

We finish our home safety checklist by looking at the hallways, utility areas and the garden.

Home Safety Awareness In Hallways and Foyers

  • Fit safety gates top and bottom of stairs.
  • Keep stair ways clear to avoid tripping hazards.
  • Check gaps between stair banisters – they should be too narrow for heads to fit and not so wide that whole bodies can fall through.
  • Carpets or rugs should be non slip.

Home Safety Awarness For Your Back Yard

Remember, when you have a toddler home safety needs to cover outside as well as inside. Have a good look at your yard and garden, too.
  • Make sure your yard is fenced front and back.
  • Fit all gates with childproof locks.
  • Swimming pools must be fenced off. It’s a good idea to fence off ponds too.
  • Keep all tools and gardening equipment locked in a shed.
  • Keep all chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, etc locked in a shed and out of reach.
  • Keep children away, preferably inside, when you are mowing the lawn or using any similar dangerous equipment in the yard.
  • Check your garden for poisonous or hazardous plants. Some plants, like euphorbias and hellebores, have sap that can cause severe skin irritations. Others, like the oleander, are extremely poisonous.
  • Always keep an eye on your child in the garden and teach them from an early age which plants (like veggies and herbs) are safe to pick and which aren’t.
  • Get rid of toadstool and mushrooms as soon as they appear.
  • Check for containers that may have water in them. Children can drown in a surprisingly small amount of water and have no idea how to get themselves out. This includes paddling pools, buckets, flower pot saucers, rainwater barrels.
