The health of your dog is important. For those of you who have been looking for a healthy treat for your dog, or for a way of supplementing commercial dog food, here's a very healthy dog biscuit recipe your dog will just love!

Thanks to Olga Griffiths for sending in this recipe. She cooks it as a special Christmas treat for her dogs, but you could cook it any time.

Olga lives in the Czech Republic and has 5 dogs and a large number of cats, not to mention having worked in a safari park. If Olga says her dogs love this, then believe me, she knows what she is talking about!

Olga's Christmas Dog Treats

1/2 Kilo (1 pound) of chicken livers

1/2 Kilo (1 pound) of rolled oats

3 whole eggs

1 or 2 teaspoons of finely chopped garlic (see note)

1 or 2 teaspoons of finely chopped rosemary

Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F to 400°F).

Grease and line a large, deep baking tray.

Simply mix all your ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Use a mixer if you want. It's quick to do so there will be less to clean up if you just do it by hand.

Tip the mixture into your baking tray and spread it evenly to about 2 or 3cm thick.

Bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Don't overcook it.

As soon as you take the pan out of the oven, cut the mixture into squares, or use cookie cutters to make shapes (the dogz will stilleat the excess so don't worry)

Allow the biscuits to cool completely before giving to your dog. Two hours at least. The biscuits will cool and firm up.

Olgas says this recipe comes from the safari park she worked in. She has modified it slightly for her dogs and they just love it.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you look on the internet you will find many arguments about the safety of feeding your dog garlic. Being part of the onion family it's true that large quantities will have a toxic effect on your dog. But small amounts, particularly cooked, will not have an adverse effect and may even be good for your dog.

Small amounts of garlic appear to have a benefical effect on intestinal parasites, fleas and skin conditions. Here's just one article on feeding dogs garlic at a site called Earth Clinic.

Onion is definately dangerous, with even small amounts causing problems. Never serve your dog foods that contain onion, raw or cooked, and be careful at barbeques and picnics that food containing raw onion or garlic isn't left in their reach.
