Recipes For Homemade Dog Foods
As a basic idea, homemade dog food should contain some or all of the following:
- Protein: choose from eggs, lamb, chicken, fish, or beef.
- Carbohydrate: choose from soy, corn, oats, barley, or wheat.
- Vegetables: yes, believe it or not, dogs like veggies too. They are full of energy and aid digestion (NEVER include onions or garlic).
- Fat or vegetable oil.
- Added vitamin and mineral supplements if your vet thinks it's necessary.

You will have noticed the warning on avoiding onions and garlic in the list above. This is because some foods disagree with your dog, and some are down right dangerous. You need to be aware of this when you are making your own dog food.
The list also includes: avocados, chocolate, grapes, macadamia nuts, mushrooms, raisins, leftovers that are "a bit off", food with spices or chilli added, food that is rich with cream, fat or butter. And, lastly, cooked or raw bones.

Hearty Beef Nosh
1 1/4 kg (2 3/4 pounds) of ground beef
1/3 cup vegetable oil
4 litres (4 1/4 quarts) of water, or salt reduced vegetable stock.
4 to 5 cups of mixed vegetables, grated or blended.(choose from carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, bean sprouts, potatoes, sweet potatoes, red peppers, spinach, beets, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.)
NOTE: NO ONIONS
1 or 2 cans of plain beans, drained (choose from kidney, cannellini, brown lentils, etc)
1/4 cup treacle or molasses (optional)
1/2 kg (1 pound) oatmeal (quick cooking oats)
1 or 2 eggs for added protein (optional)
Peel, cube and boil any hard vegetables like the carrots, potatoes, and beets.
Meanwhile, take a large, heavy saucepan or stock pot (at least 8 litres in capacity) and brown the ground beef in a little of the oil.
Once the beef is cooked evenly, add the water (or stock) in one go.
Bring it to the boil. And allow to boil rapidly for a few minutes.
Take the vegetable you have chosen and either blend, mash or grate. They need to be in small pieces combine properly with the meat.
Add the vegetable mixture to the boiling meat.
Add the beans and the oatmeal and stir well to combine. If the mixture is too stiff and dry, add another cup or two of water. If it seems to moist then leave it to boil for a while longer. The texture and moisture will vary according to the vegetables you have added.
Keep stirring the mixture to keep it from catching and burning.
As soon as all the vegetables are cooked and the consistency is not sloppy, remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the eggs (if you are using them), and allow the mixture to cool.
Once it has reached room temperature you can serve it to your dog.
Store the remainder in sealed containers in the fridge for 3 days, or freeze for 2 months.
