Safety Checklists Covering the Living Room and Bedrooms

When you have a child home safety becomes an important issue.

Use our handy checklist to look at the living and lounge areas and the bedrooms.

Check Your Child Home Safety - Living and Lounge Rooms

  • Put anything breakable out of reach.
  • Shelving needs to be fixed to the wall. Pack books in tightly so little fingers can’t prise them out.
  • Keep the television and stereo equipment out of reach, preferable shut away in a cabinet.
  • Fit the fireplace with a heavy fire guard.
  • Radiators or electric heaters need to be protected with a fire guard.
  • Move all ornaments out of reach – you can redecorate your home when your children are older.
  • Never put down hot drinks in reach of your child.
  • Never leave alcoholic drinks in reach of your child.
  • Never leave matches or lighters lying around.
  • All windows and glass doors should be fitted with safety glass.
  • Electrical equipment should be disconnected when not in use. Run electrical cords around the wall.
  • Make sure any cords for curtains or blinds are tied up out of the way.

Check Your Child Home Safety - Bedrooms

  • Never use an electric heater in a child’s room at night. They could throw off a blanket or toy and cause a fire.
  • Always buy non-flammable pyjamas.
  • Keep children’s toys in boxes on the floor or low down in cupboards so they aren’t tempted to climb for them.
  • Never leave your child unattended on a change table.
  • Never leave your child in their cot with the side down.
  • Check toy box lids for safety guards to protect little fingers form being jammed.
