Are You Tired of Being Covered in Scratches?

Do you have an angry cat?

When you walk near her does her tail start to swish or thump in an agitated manner?

Do you find your quiet cuppa interrupted as a whirlwind of claws and fur whips around the room leaving you bewildered and wounded?

Do you find you are having a lovely play with your cat only to have this change in an instant to a violent attack?

Maybe your cat even has a name like Psycho or Predator? Mine was named Dangerous Jeff. She was such an adorable little thing…when she was asleep.

Your cat is a hunter and aggressive cat behavior occurs naturally.

Stalking, chasing, leaping, pouncing, swatting and biting are all necessary skills for catching prey, and cats love to bring them into their play as well.

But not all cats play this way. Some are wonderfully affectionate and gentle with their owners.

Why Do I Have An Angry Cat?

When you have a continually angry cat, you will need to step back and try to solve the cause for this aggression.

  • Your cat may be unwell – sometimes cats can suffer for months with a urinary tract infection that causes pain and crankiness. Take your cat to the vet for a thorough check-up to rule out undetected injury or illness before trying to tackle any behavioral modification.

  • Your cat may be extremely bored – house cats in particular tend to have limited outlets for their pent up energy. And when can they exercise their hunting “muscles”? A playful tussle with an affectionate owner can set off an explosion of uncontrollable violence. This is particularly rewarding for the cat if the owner reacts in a loud and exciting way.
  • Your cat may have been removed from the litter too early and has not been socialized sufficiently. Kittens learn very quickly from their siblings and mother that a sharp nip results in a sharper bite in return. They know that if they want to play, they need to keep their claws and teeth in check.
  • Your cat may have suffered a trauma that has really unsettled them. She may be on permanent red alert. Has your cat been in a bad cat fight recently? Have you accidentally stepped on her tail? Something like this (especially in an under stimulated house cat) can become all consuming and so exciting they just can’t let it go.

If your cat seems permanently angry then you will probably find there is a physical or mental injury causing the problem. You can seek professional help and work out treatment with your vet. If treatment is available you may see a huge improvement in your cat behavior, but sometimes there is no treatment and you may just have to learn to live with an unfriendly cat.

If your cat only displays apparent anger or aggression doing play, then it sounds like you have a cat who has learnt that this type of play is the most rewarding (for them). Luckily, there is quite a lot you can do to bring this back to a type of behavior that is more acceptable for you and your visitors.
